- Lui Collins
- Lui Collins has earned international acclaim for her “grown-up” music, but when she gets in front of a group of families with young children, all the seriousness falls away as she gets down to the business of singing with children. While her over 35 years of music study and performance is evident in her vocal and instrumental proficiency (she accompanies herself on guitar and banjo), the spontaneity she’s learned in working with the youngest of children is what rules in her family concerts, as she brings her spirit of playfulness and whimsy to the stage. You may expect to be called upon to sing and wiggle and be generally silly!
After starting out singing in local venues while studying music theory and sociology at the University of Connecticut, Collins established herself in the folk community in the late seventies and early eighties with the release of her early Philo and Green Linnet recordings. She has since brought the total to 8 solo recordings, including one for children called North of Mars. This highly acclaimed album was awarded a Parents' Choice Honor, and was recommended by NPR's “All Things Considered” who called it "beautifully rendered." Her poetry chapbook Moon of Ripe Berries, first published in 2001, is now in its third printing. Collins has been featured on several other musicians’ recording projects, singing both lead and harmony vocals and playing guitar, and she has had her songs recorded by Garnet Rogers, Priscilla Herdman, and others. Her most recent recording, Closer, was released by Waterbug Records in 2006.
Lui’s work with children evolved naturally, starting with story hours at the local library with her own children. She collaborated in the 1990’s with the Grumbling Gryphons Children's Theater, writing "Peace on Earth" for a 1992 Arts Camp production, and in 1993, the song "Sedna," based on an Inuit myth, from her collaboration with the children.
A native Vermonter, Collins now makes her home in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts. Wishing to bring music into her home community, she trained with international early childhood music and movement program Music Together and founded Hilltown Music Together in 2003. In 2005, Ms. Collins was awarded Music Together Certification I status, for outstanding achievement in teaching, musicianship, program philosophy, and parent education. In 2007 Collins began research and development of her own Kids’ Jam, a music education program for 5-7 year-olds, which is currently her primary creative focus. She has produced 9 seasons of Kids’ Jam CD’s and Songbooks to date, with songs she has collected from traditional sources as well as many she has composed herself specifically for the program.
Collins is highly regarded by both the press and her fellow musicians. The Boston Globe dubs Collins “one of New England’s first and brightest stars,” and Sing Out! Magazine calls her “incomparable.” Renowned guitarist Dave van Ronk called her “one of the best guitarist-arrangers I have heard in years.” Michael Devlin of Music Matters Review describes Lui as being “among the barefoot royalty” of those “creating new traditional music.” Andrew Calhoun of Waterbug Records says, “Lui Collins sings the way people did a great long time ago, before most of us forgot how to breathe.” And as guitarist/folksinger/songwriter Geoff Bartley says, “Lui’s got the juju!”

- Joseph Firecrow
- You can teach someone how to play the flute, but you can't teach them how to make it sing. ~ Joseph FireCrow
“The natural beauty of the flute evokes very powerful emotions. The traditional flute is social, not ceremonial, in nature and should always be treated with that in mind and spirit. Joseph Fire Crow
In 1992, Fire Crow recorded the album, The Mist. Two years later, in 1994, he released a second self-produced recording, Rising Bird. These recordings were sold only at concerts.
In April of 1996, his self-titled release, Fire Crow, was one of the first recordings to be launched nationally on the Makoché label and is one of the label’s best sellers. Echodisc said in a review of Fire Crow, “Joseph Fire Crow is quite simply one of the most gifted players of the Native American flute, this is beautifully recorded.” Another reviewer described Fire Crow as a “national treasure.”
Fire Crow’s follow-up, Cheyenne Nation, combined a soulful mixture of traditional flute and
contemporary instrumentation to earn a GRAMMYTM nomination at the 43rd Annual Awards.
In November of 2003, Fire Crow’s Legend of the Warrior received top honors for both the Native American Music Awards “SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR,” as well as the Indian Summer Music Awards FLUTE CATEGORY WINNER.
Fire Crow’s collaborative effort with Jim Cockey lead to the composition of “Parmly’s Dream,” from the CD Signature. This release won FireCrow the “BEST INSTRUMENTAL RECORDING” Award at the 7th Annual Native American Music Awards.
Red Beads, was released in late August of 2005. Red Beads comes full circle with a return to the traditional. This recording includes Fire Crow’s mother, Elva Stands In Timber. Joseph was honored to have her join him. This release won FireCrow the “FLUTIST OF THE YEAR” Award at the 8th Annual Native American Music Awards.
. Ken Burns also chose some of Fire Crow's music to be included on the soundtrack for his documentary "Lewis and Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery.” Most recently, Fire Crow’s music was featured on Public Broadcasting Service’s film, The War that Made America.
Fire Crow was also a guest artist on Peter Kater’s 2007 album, Faces of the Sun, which earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best New Age Music Album at the 50th Annual Awards. Face the Music , FireCrow’s latest release, brings the traditional together with modern stylings for a
must have collection of contemporary Native American Music! Watch for it at the GRAMMYS in 2010!

- The Music Bureau
- The bio for Mark Graves Jr. starts on November 22, 1994 on Route 2 in Colchester, Ct.
It was dusk and my friends and I made a choice to take a "shorcut" home. That shortcut across Route 2 east got me hit by a Reverend driving 60 MPH and a traumatic brian injury. Lifestar pumped life back into me on the way to Hartford Hospital while I started my twentysomething day trip to a coma.
While I was on 48 hour watch to decide how long my life support plug staying plugged in, my memory was jogged in every possible way by every possible relative and friend I had. But it was the music being played on tapes recorded by my uncles band that changed my status. My uncle who taught me my only guitar lesson and gave me my 1st guitar that showed the doctors that there was hope.
Every week after the doctors gave their diagnosis of a vegatable like state for the rest of my life IF I did wake up. Well I woke up and with over 20 members of my family in the hospital on a regular basis and my mother there fulltime. I went from a bedridden coma to an outpatient that could walk in 3 months.
5 months after waking up from death and back I got back in the public school system. That's when my rollercoaster ride started. I will leave the details for another time, but everything from drug addicted and alcholic family to near expulsion from school to gang violence in my life happened.
But when I opened my eyes after that long period of sleep I had this feeling...this knowledge that I still can't explain to this day. I couldn't explain what I knew or what had happened to me. But I had knowledge about life that I can't formulate words to explain. I knew SO MUCH, yet I didn't know what I knew...but I can see and feel it.
After all the dips and climbs throughout the years I found myself moving back to my fathers house to try to give him support through a divorce and attempt to keep him alive. Living in the right time, right place, I met my wife. During our engagemet, I started a vending machine business while working a seperate fulltime job. I had come to the point where I decided to put my music on the back burner and build a family. Strangely...putting my music on the back burner is was brought me to a music store in Salem, Ct..
I knew the owner...I thought...and I walked in one day to place a vending machine only to find a new owner. Well, I got a spot for my vending machine and decided if I'm only playing guitar once in a while....I might as well have a good distortion pedal.
So I played for a few minutes and the new owner walks over, telling me that I was good and asking if I ever thought of giving lessons. Turns out a guitar instructor quit that day and he needed someone to fill the spot. I thought it was just talk to get me to purchase something from his store...so I gave him my number and forgot about the offer. But 2 weeks later I got a call and became a guitar instructor. I put my time and energy into teaching while trying to help build the store in any way I could. It's been 4 years now...I am a FULLTIME guitar instructor and a part owner of The Music Bureau. My business partner is one of my best friends and he is my daughters Godfather. Every one that is part of our store has helped me keep my head high every day and keep seeing my life as a miracle. Together we work toward a goal everyday - get kids off the couch and turning dreams into reality. No matter how big their dreams of being famous get...they know that there is someone here that wants to make those dreams come true.
I don't know any instructors at The Music Bureau that don't want to make music a positive part of a students life. We get closer and closer everyday to making a positive impact on more people. Our 'Camp of Rock' has shown the world first hand that music can change peoples lifes. Last camp there were students that only took their first lesson the week before and were playing in 3-4 songs in front of 100+ people.
My life is still climbing uphill at a rate that absolutely amazes me. My mum-mum kept this music in me alive when my life looked like it was all down from where I was. And from a place so low I saw that only when I allowed my life to lead, that the miracles kept going. There was no order to follow or answer to why and how this was all happening, but it still happened.
Do you know what my secret was? Never giving up and never letting my image of where I was supposed to be - hold me back.
The less I tried to fight what life had to offer and the more I kept my mind open to life not happening the way I hoped-things fell into place.
Every choice I made was where I was. No matter how I got there...I was there. I was working with my destination everyday, not working until my destination.
